I finally saw the movie Garden State. Having sat through it, I now know why people said I should see it, since it stars a kind of mumbly sad guy in New Jersey who's dad is a psychiatrist, who goes to Home Depot and rediscovers his emotional life. Plus he dates Natalie Portman. But that is where the similarities end.

Plus my dad is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, and even though I may be mumbly, I was never on any kind of medication. Plus in the movie he accidently killed his mom, and my mom is not only alive, she is cranking out art so fast that there is hardly anywhere left to stand in the house. You can see some on http://etta.ehrlich.com.

All that said, even though Garden State is deeply flawed, it is a good start, especially for a guy who is only in his twenties, plus he wrote and directed it and stars in it so I have to give him some slack. But I have more in common with Paul Giammatti in American Splendor than Garden State, in case anyone is keeping score of which movies have similarities to my life.
