Went
to see the Chagall show, which sort of seemed like a shame on such a beautiful
day. But it was kind of worth it. For one thing, this is the only time this collection
will be on display in the U.S., which seems like reason enough to see the show.
Only it's not like it's his greatest hits or the biggest retrospective or anything.
You can go to the Chagall museum to see that. But this was a big group of stuff,
some of it pretty interesting. I was kind of distracted seeing it, because there
was a huge line to get in, and I bypassed them with my corporate ID, which made
me feel a little badly for all the people in line. I also went across the street
first to Yerba Buena, where there was a big Phillipino cultural festival going
on, which also kind of made me feel bad for people, as there were huge crowds
of people engaged in actions I found sort of depressing, such as glomming up as
many plastic freebees from the various booths that were set up. And the freebees
weren't even useful, like a pen, this is stuff like red plastic clown noses. Anyway,
the Chagall show was not without it's high points, and I was surprised how nutty
he was, even as a young man, drawing figures in upside down, painting them green,
signing his name in various ways. That evening, we watched Rabbit Proof Fence,
which is part of my ongoing, NetFlix driven catch up to culture that happened
six months ago in theaters. Anyway, it's a horror show of a story, all true, which
is that Australians kidnapped aboriginal people and forced them into Christian
training and broke up families. So this one set of sisters ran away and walked
1200 miles back to where they came from, through the dessert. Very sad story.
Nice film, if you like that sort of sad story. Also, as a kind of Larry David
homage, I rented Sour Grapes, which is the film he did after Seinfeld, before
Curb Your Enthusiasm. It is a genuinely horrible movie, which, even as a fan,
I have to warn off anyone from watching. I guess that's it, even though there
is always room for more stuff to say. Oh, also saw Talk To Her, the Almodovar
movie. Like all his movies, this was full of crazy Spanish women, violence and
surreal images. Ok if you like that sort of thing.
